Good Gialli | Mr. E's Horror Weblog

There’s Always Room for Giallo

I’m a big fan of 1960’s and 70’s giallo films.  Aside from all of the Dario Argento fare that is a prerequisite for even discussing the subgenre, I’ve branched out and patiently grew to appreciate Mario Bava.  Even the early Fulci films are worth the watch.  The are myriad other directors–some worth mentioning, some not–who tried their hand at the subgenre, but there has not been a worthy addition to the canon in decades.  Not that Argento hasn’t tried in the last four or so years, with vile results by the way, but gialli seems to be dead–a zeitgeist of the early 60’s through the mid-late 70’s.  I am quite aware that Argento is in post-production of a film actually titled Giallo.  I have lost faith in Argento, though Do You Like Hitchcock? was worth the watch.  He has also recently released movies that are nothing if not embarrassing–The Card Player and Mother of Tears.
Horror purists might scoff at gialli even being part of the genre.  While they definitely are rooted in the detective/mystery genre, I do not see how one could argue that Profondo Rosso is not horror.  This post is not to bitch about the sorry state of gialli or even to grieve the passing of Argento’s brilliance.  The post is just a very roundabout way of asking you the reader if you have seen any good giallo films recently and if so, may I have the titles?
