A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET Giveaway

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Not to press the point of horror fans everywhere. I am not opposed to remakes in principle. The Thing was done better the second time around. I would also argue that the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers was well worth making. I, however, do feel that remaking a film based solely on the profitablility of the franchise is unfortunate. I’m not talking about tacking on a ninth Nightmare on Elm Street to the end of a well played-out series. I am referring to the remake of the iconic film that introduced the world to Freddy Krueger. I simply do not see the need for an updating. Nothing against Jackie Earle Haley. I think he is a fine actor, but he is not Freddy. Nobody is Freddy except for Robert Englund.

Zombies vs. Vampires

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

zombies v. vampiresIt is a rare era in the horror world where creatures from genre pictures have invaded pop culture. In the past we have seen particular characters recognized as pop icons (i.e. the possessed Regan, Freddy, Jason, etc.) but we are now living in an era where entire subgenres are red hot. Zombies have been at the forefront of pop culture for several years now. Shaun of the Dead, arguably, ushered in the zombie invasion by introducing them to comedy and vice versa. I would also credit the highly stylized 28 Days Later. George Romero, in a sort of paradoxical turn of events, used the popularity of the zombie satire to introduce more of his own zombie films. Since then, of course, we have seen countless low budget zombie films of all genres; some great (Fido), some not-so-great (pretty much all of the others). Shaun of the Dead and Fido even pioneered a new subgenre–the romzomcom–romantic zombie comedy.

The Sanctity of Freddy Krueger, Pinhead

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Every culture has its icons. Americans, being the plugged in consumerists that we are have many. We have, for decades and decades, looked past the religious to the world of the celebrity for the icons and archetypes that we worship. The are many subtle levels of iconography, and somewhere on that spectrum is Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger.

Michael Jackson – THRILLER – Thrills

Monday, September 21st, 2009

I was in first grade when Thriller was released, LP and video. The video absolutely scared the crap out of my, but I would hide partially behind a recliner so as only to watch it with my left eye while my right eye was safely sheltered from the literal danse macabre. I became so fond of the album with all of its songs–”Beat It,” “PYT,” “Billie Jean,” etc.–that for the following Christmas I asked for another vinyl copy just in case the first one wore out.

Do Not Remake!

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

It goes without saying that mainstream horror films are suffering from lack of originality and the proliferation of bad remakes. Though many classics have already been remade, I want us together to create a list of films that are too sacred to remake. I don’t ever want to see a remake of Rosemary’s Baby. What other films can you add to this list?

JENNIFER’S BODY? What About Jennifer’s Face?

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

jennifers_bodyWhile I am not privy to such things as preview film copies and other resources that “real” reviewers have access to, I am still going to offer a preemptive review–a query rather–of Jennifer’s Body, or at least of its lead actress. The question that I am posing is whether or not Megan Fox is too beautiful to be scary. I am not wishing to discuss her acting chops or her nonexistent experience with horror films, I wish only to discuss Ms. Fox’s best asset, her looks. Is she too beautiful to strike fear into the heart of America, or at least the teenage boys who will most likely be the largest demographic to view this film.

TWIN PEAKS: Nearly 20 Years Later

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

twinpeakslauraAs we approach the twentieth anniversary of Twin Peaks’ initial television debut it is time to ask if it is still relevant. Has Twin Peaks lost its eeriness, and cult draw and become cheesy?
